We are living in a time when things are getting progressively more expensive and our earnings seem to be staying around the same. This has got many of us looking for ways to save money and be a bit more frugal in our everyday lives. Whether you just want to start stashing away a few more pounds just for a savings pot, or if you are saving for something in particular, there are many swaps you can make. Here we take a look at three alternative things you might want in your life and what you can do instead.

Instead of: Getting a new car - Upgrade your current one

If you find that your car is looking a little tired, it can be tempting to move completely to a new model. Yet if your vehicle is working fine, there may be other things you can do in order to give your car an upgrade. One of the first things you can do is to look into car paint. By giving it a fresh lick of paint or just switching up the colour you’d be surprised what a difference it can make. You could also look at upgrading the interior with new seat upholstery and a new tech dashboard for example.

Instead of: Going abroad - Give a staycation a go

We all want to go on holiday, sometimes a big holiday abroad just isn’t feasible. When you add together the cost of things such as flights, your travel insurance, passports and more, it can soon rack up to a lot. Instead of going abroad, why not turn your sights closer to home? There are so many stunning staycation destinations to choose from, that you can have a truly beautiful holiday without having to head overseas. Do your research and find out how far you want to drive or get public transport and see what is available for you.

Instead of: Moving home -  Redecorate your house

If you are getting fed up with your home and want to move somewhere new, it might just be because you’re fed up with how it looks and feels. If you have lived somewhere for a while for example, it can get dull and boring. Combat this by giving rooms in your house a redecorate and refresh. You’ll be surprised at what a difference it will make and even if you still want to move in the future, it will buy you some time and make you enjoy your living situation a lot more in the meantime.

These are just a few changes you can make that mean you don’t need to totally miss out on that something new you want in your life. The current climate shouldn’t mean having to forego all the big things you want to add to your goals, however you should look to make sacrifices if you don’t want to spend a huge amount. What are some top alternatives you have done in the past that have helped you to save money? Let us know in the comments below, we’d love to hear from you.
